We have an Oster Breadmaker. Its worked fine up until the last three or four uses. Some type of machine oil? seems to be coming from the bottom/paddle which leaves minor black streaks all over the dough no matter how many times we try to clean it. What could be happening?

It sounds like the seal on the shaft has gone bad. The gears in the drive mechanism are lubricated at the factory and if the seal fails it will leak grease. When you remove the “basket” that holds the bread you should be able to see where the shaft enters the machine. Check for grease there. Also there may be build up of material in the shaft area of the “basket” That is fairly easy to take apart for a more through cleaning. There is a “C” clip on the end of the shaft, with that removed the shaft and paddle should come out for cleaning. If there is grease coming from the main shaft it will most likely have to be repaired by a shop.

Why does our breadmaker get “oil” leaking out onto the dough?
